Forest Parks

Our forest parks are where most people first encountered Ireland's forests. Our first forest park was opened in 1966 at Gougane Barra in Cork and since then, we have developed lots of visitor facilities at each park. They are our key recreation sites and they have something for all ages and all abilities.

All forest parks have car-parking, toilets, play areas, waymarked trails, permanent orienteering and lots more.

Our newest forest park opened in Cavan Burren in May 2014 and it is an area of very rich archaeological and geological interest, but also has trails into fabulous scenery in north-west Cavan.

Many parks were originally part of the large demesnes which were vested to the state and have some magnificent old woodlands, veteran trees and are packed full of interesting heritage
